Greenhouse gases and aerosol pollution emitted by human activities are responsible for increases in the frequency, intensity, and duration of droughts around the world, according to a recently published study.
New research identifies the signature of greenhouse gas increase and the associated global warming in long-term thermal wavelength satellite measurements. It shows the evolution of the Earth system in response to human influence can be tracked by this thermal signature.
Greenhouse gas pollution caused by human activities trapped 49% more heat in the atmosphere in 2021 than they did in 1990, according to NOAA scientists. Carbon dioxide remained the leading culprit, but other heat-trapping gases included methane and nitrous oxide.
In 2022, the global surface average for carbon dioxide rose by 2.13 parts per million, roughly the same rate observed during the last decade. Atmospheric methane, less abundant but more potent, rose by 14.0 parts per billion, the fourth-largest annual increase recorded since NOAA’s systematic measurements began in 1983.
